FLORIDA NATIVES PROTEST COLD!
In a massive showing they came by the hundreds, protesting the cold weather and below average temperatures of the South Florida waterways they call home. Every year they flock in droves to huddle together in the warm water runoff from our local electric plant in Riviera Beach. I’m referring of course to Manatee sightings. A mass of wide bodied, rounded backs were all you could see. The cute snouts coming up for air and the huge back flipper that propels these gentle giants gave away their identity. Some sported scales showing their age and many others displayed large ugly scars collected over time from the blades of motor boats.
YES, you guessed it. I’m writing about our gentle sweet sea cows, the Manatee! They share our canals and waterway with us, unselfishly accepting the onslaught of boats and their passengers every year. Boaters come by the thousands ignoring the signs warning of a Manatee Zone. The pain they must endure as a propeller blade rips into their flesh is Unimaginable! If you find yourself lucky enough to be out on the water please be mindful of these gentle giants. For the most part they try to stay clear, cruising ever so slowly along the sides and bottom of the water. This is where the most delicious nibbles can be found. However, eventually they must meander out into the often deadly dangerous areas to feed.
If you’re standing on a dock and you hear the lapping of the water and the soft sounds of breath being inhaled and exhaled, look around. They are there, slowly cruising by, many times with a baby in tow. If you don’t hear them, for they are ever so stealth, they’ll scare the crap out of you as they come up for air right in front, back or beside you. They mean you no harm. Whatever you do don’t try to touch them. It’s highly illegal for they are protected! Just watch and marvel at their innocence and curiosity.
There is a very lovely place to see them just south of the 13th Street Bridge on Broadway. The 13th Street Bridge is adjacent to the FPL facility and the Port of Palm Beach. Above all, when you see the cruise ship in dock you will know you’re heading in the right direction. Immediately over the bridge turn left onto either 59th or 58th street and head east towards the water. You will see the entrance into the parking area for the FPL Eco-Discovery Center. Just follow the crowds. It’s great for the kids with plenty of interactive exhibits. By all means bring your picnic and frisbee to enjoy the beautiful lawn area. There are plenty of benches and tables at the water’s side.
Without a doubt we’ll have a few more cold snaps here in Palm Beach County before this season is over so please check it out for yourselves at VISITMANATEELAGOON.COM Oh, did I forget to mention they offer FREE Yoga class on Saturday morning, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. How awesome is that. I’ll see you there and as always…NAMASTE
On a side note if you are coming by tri- rail or bus, you want to get off the train at the Mangonia Park station and take the bus to the corner of 59th and Broadway. From there it’s a five minute walk. You can easily find all train schedules at http://tri-rail.com
Heya just wanted to give you a brief heads up and let you know a few of the pictures aren’t loading correctly. I’m not sure why but I think its a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different internet browsers and both show the same outcome.
