IT’S TURTLE NESTING SEASON AGAIN!

by in Blog
This subject is of so much importance to the Enviroment, to the species, to the Eco-system, to our beaches here in Florida, to our children and basically to all humanity.  I am reposting this article to reiterate everything I’ve written before. Please give it a read. Take it very seriously. It’s a super amazing experience to witness but mostly it needs to remain private to the mama Turtles so that they are not startled and disturbed while they are bringing their precious cargo to the sand. It’s happening now, every night on our beaches, so please be mindful, pick up your trash and any items that would obstruct her path to a nest. Enjoy from a distance, quietly, and you will see one of Mother Nature’s true miracles.  DO NOT under any circumstances, try to get close or touch the turtles!!! DO NOT disturb the nests after she goes back into the water and know that it is against the law to mess with the babies when they come out of the sand and risk their lives to get into the ocean!  Be amazed!

It’s that time of year again here in south Florida for a wondrous seasonal event. From May through October here on our beaches Sea Turtles come to lay their eggs. Most noteworthy, this is one of  Mother Nature’s most awe inspiring, life changing rituals.  This is the time of year when some of Earth’s oldest surviving creatures follow their homing instincts and come to regenerate their species right here in my backyard. South Florida is home to the nesting grounds of 80% of sea turtles, of which six out of the seven species are on the endangered list and in threat of extinction. We are also home to the http://Marinelife.org, Loggerhead marine life center in Juno Beach. They do the wonderful work of saving and rehabilitating injured adult and/or orphaned turtle hatchlings.
Female turtles nest every two or three years. They will return to the beaches where they were born, to make their  nest and lay, on average, one hundred rubbery eggs. They will haul their huge bodies up onto the beach. Weighing in at an average of 200 to 600 lbs. and up to six feet in length at the extreme, this is a garganutan labor of maternal instinct. With their large rear flippers they dig a nest and lovingly lay their brood with total unwavering dedication. This divine event is not easily forgotten.

FULL MOON EVENT

I am happy to say, tonight is the big full moon and we have a group scheduled to quietly make our way down to our local beach, http://Palmbeachcounty.com,practice some tai chi, and  wait with baited breath, to be allowed to witness this god given moment. One account, from a lady walking the beach last night at midnight was she counted nine Loggerhead turtles coming out of the sea to lay their eggs. Unfortunately there was also a group of people with small children being very loud and disruptive. Therefore one of the turtles simply turned around and went back into the ocean. As a result none of her eggs will ever experience life.

RESPECT MOTHER NATURE

A word to those few individuals who do not know any different. Above all, it is of the utmost importance that you do not disturb the nesting female turtles in any way.  That means,  don’t run up and startle them. They are very sensitive to intrusion. Don’t startle them with a camera flash into their faces or anywhere near them. DO NOT attempt to ride them.  If disturbed in the slightest bit,  they will simply turn around, go back into the ocean. They will drop their eggs and the  embryo will drown and die.  Consequently the species is already in danger of extinction. I’m just saying”.  I would like to think that people care about what happens to our beautiful animals. It is only very briefly that we are allowed a glimpse into one of the most intense moments of their life. For this reason we should honor and cherish it so that our children will someday be allowed the same privilege.

THE BIG EVENT

If you’re lucky enough to be around about sixty days after that great event, you may see something even more amazing. The hatchlings will break out of their shells. Against all odds they will scratch their way to the surface and then high tail it to the ocean.  Not many of them make it. Man made lights, the seagulls and the big fish looking for lunch are all working against them. As a result almost 90% of the hatchlings perish before they’re a week old.  Therefore it is of the utmost importance that they are allowed to continue the breeding and hatching process without any interference from us.  See you on the beach.  SHHHHH!                            beach steps
